Smoking will be a bigger factor in determining film ratings, the Motion Picture Association of America said Thursday, but critics said the move does not go far enough to discourage teens from taking up the habit. MPAA Chairman Dan Glickman said his group's ratings board, which previously had considered underage smoking in assigning film ratings, now will take into account smoking by adults, as well.
That adds smoking to a list of such factors as sex, violence and language in determining the MPAA's G, PG, PG-13, R and NC-17 ratings. Film raters will consider the pervasiveness of tobacco use, whether it glamorizes smoking and the context in which smoking appears, as in movies set in the past when smoking was more common.

Soon we won't have to be responsible for any of our own actions! We can just blame it on the movies!

Honestly, I would want to actually be a parent for my children, not the MPAA. For the formative years of my children, I'd hope I'd be seeing these movies WITH my children, and talk about the contents of them. I get the hope for "warning" in advance, but why would I just randomly put on a DVD (almost wrote "tape"-- showing age!) without knowing it's contents were appropriate for my (if not your) ten year old?
I never noticed ANY of that stuff until I started smoking. Once I started smoking I became aware of anyone else smoking on TV or in movies. I watched "I Love Lucy" at one point and almost died. And that was just the show, not one of their Philip Morris commercials.
Have you seen "Thank You for Smoking"? It's wonderful! And even though the entire movie is about smoking, no one is seen smoking in the whole movie.
I find smoking abhorrent and don't like when people do it in my presence, but I would never deny someone the right to smoke in their privacy. I don't like it when when the government or other organizations make decisions for me.
